SIMPLY COMPLEX An exhibition of works by PIERRE LEGRAND at GALLERY GITANJALI, GOA from 6 Dec 2014 - 2 Jan 2015

...can algorithms and poetry intersect at art ?
...can catharsis become a vibration
...can a thought energize space

walk the maze and join the dots with us at SIMPLY COMPLEX ,this  December at Gallery Gitanjali, Goa

Cellular structures wrote the whole Universe and Man into existence ,the sacred DNA of life and matter that unfurled infinite possibilities ...this was the threshold at which Pierre found his call to the unknown ,the eternal frontier .

In a 'Season in Hell ' , Rimbaud spoke of inventing a poetic language that would be 'accessible to all senses' .

Language is an abstraction , the substitution of sound , symbol or code ...magical in how it conjures and draws out images , actions , sensations from our collective consciousness .
Here started Pierre's journey of designing and perfecting his artistic source code..... alphabets which started in geometry , morphed into strokes and dots in his quest to distill the essence , threaded with algorithms to interject space and colour .

The Intersection of Geometry and Poetry ...Light and Colour

Pierre's work took off with the invention of a coded script, in an effort to understand the mystery of being human from the cellular level, that innermost core where the material and the spiritual can impact each other to alter life and the environment.

Says Pierre, " Working with the structures of my coded script helped me see a correlation with human and cellular structures and their patterns: how they impact one another, allow infiltration, or create space for change to occur.

This is what painting became for me. Not a way to ‘show' something to people but a way to see, to experience life anew though colours, transparence and light in its many layered complexity. Each layer is often very simple but by different super impositions they attain a spontaneous complexity that life offers and an acceptance of it. "

Born in Paris, an engineer by profession, Pierre Legrand's artistic journey began after coming to India in 1968. The invention of a coded script began structuring his work from 1989, morphing through painting, sculpture or installations. Legrand exhibited extensively in Europe and India between 1989 and 2000. This followed an exploration of space, transparency and porosity in collaboration with architecture. His work has featured alongside Mark Tobey and Richard Serra and his installations include Resonance, Light Matter, Light Station and Colour Piano. Pierre's work also features in ‘Odd Volumes'  , which  showcases a selection of experimental and innovative works of book art from the 1960s to the present. Drawn from a major collection given to the Yale University Art Gallery by Allan Chasanoff, it features approximately 100 works by more than 80 artists, including acclaimed figures such as Olafur Eliasson, Yoko Ono, and Dieter Roth,  offering a rare opportunity to discover the world of book art.

He lives and works in Auroville.

Pierre says , " When I started out as an artist, I used to think I could change the world with my work and people who saw them would somehow miraculously change. It was a bit simplistic, given the circumstances. Life is embedded in structures that are difficult to change, but they sometimes respond to love, to light or to freedom and beauty that leave an imprint in the structures of our being and allow us to change. I began to use writing as a way to anchor my work on any given surface. It was my call to the unknown. Working with the structures of my coded script helped me see a correlation with human and cellular structures and their patterns: how they impact one another, allow infiltration, or create space for change to occur".

"The more one tries to understand life and matter, the more one is confronted by a baffling complexity. And yet we all long to understand, or at least feel connected with the universe we find ourselves in. This is what painting became for me. Not a way to ‘show' something to people but a way to see, to experience life anew though colours, transparence and light in its many layered complexity. Each layer is often very simple but by different super-impositions they attain a spontaneous complexity that life offers and an acceptance of it. Thus Simply Complex - in which the writing disappears and is no longer important".

LIGHT MATTER / ATELIER - a book about Pierré's life & work.
Publisher : Lustre

Launched By Roli Books at the French Embassy, New Delhi

Date : 7th Feb, 2014 - by Pierre Legrand

When he started out on his artistic journey, the question plaguing Pierre Legrand was: what was there to see? Was there something still to reveal in a world flooded with too much of everything? Underneath the chaos, was there another map of man to be discovered? Cellular structures that wrote the whole universe, also wrote a human being to existence - was that the frontier from where all would change? Could that become Art? In his journey, Legrand has questioned limits and redefined matter. This book is a visual record of his path-breaking work - the exploration of a distinct inner territory at a time crowded by many outer conflicts.

THE CONTEMPT (LE MEPRIS) by Jean-Luc Godard
with magnificient actress Brigitte Bardot!

Summary:
American film producer Jeremy Prokosch hires respected Austrian director Fritz Lang (playing himself) to direct a film adaptation of Homer's Odyssey. Dissatisfied with Lang's treatment of the material as an art film, Prokosch hires Paul Javal, a novelist and playwright, to rework the script. The conflict between artistic expression and commercial opportunity parallels Paul's sudden estrangement from his wife Camille Javal (Brigitte Bardot), who becomes aloof with Paul after being left alone with Prokosch, a millionaire playboy..
