Feathers And Fur
Gallery Gitanjali will be hosting ‘Feathers and Fur': A wildlife painting exhibition by naturalist and artist Carl D'Silva between 25- 30 August 2013. There would also be a "Meet the Artist Hour" everyday between 6pm to 7pm at Gallery Gitanjali. The exhibition will be opened on 24 August 2013 6.30pm to 8pm by H.E., the Governor of Goa , Shri Bharat Vir Wanchoo .
Carl D'Silva is widely acknowledged as India's leading Wildlife Artist. His, meteoric rise from a conventional art school education in Mumbai, to introducing world-class standards in modern Wildlife Art for the first time in this country has attracted approving nods from across the world.
As the Bombay Natural History Society staff-artist from 1986-89 he had several opportunities to accompany wildlife ecologists on field studies when his knowledge of Indian natural history grew tremendously. These extended sojourns across the country also allowed him to hone his skills through technically demanding renditions of wildlife in its natural environment.
This period (1987-91) also brought his first taste for international recognition when he became the first and as yet only Indian to have his paintings selected for exhibition by the UK based premiere Wildlife Art (consortium), the Society of Wildlife Artists at their annual juried show in London's Mall Galleries. Several of these paintings were bought by an appreciative European audience.
Since 1989, Carl's talent in illustrating Field Guides on birds has been in great demand in Europe and in India. Beginning with a completely new set of 64 colour plates depicting 538 species for Salim Ali's revised edition of ‘The Book of Indian Birds', his talent has been used to illustrate a British sponsored field-guide to ‘Birds of the Indian Subcontinents' which led to ‘Birds of Bhutan', ‘Birds of Nepal' and ‘Birds of North India'. He has also been a major contributor to specialized monographs like ‘Parrots of the World' and ‘Pheasants, Partridges & Grouse of the World' and the ‘Birds of East Asia' which was published in September 2009.
Carl's forte is accurate and real life richness of details that he brings to his bird plates and canvasses. His global exposure to the intensely critical community of wildlife artists and authors has in a short span of time catapulted him to a position where he is one of the most sought after artists for high quality illustrations that have come to be expected of Field Guides. The ‘Birds of Mumbai', (IBH 2003) is a best seller. Painting on big canvas enables him to use the brush more effectively as an extension to use the field-trained eye.

Photo-exhibition : RAW by Nadia Gunardisurya
OPENING : Saturday 19th October, 7pm.
Beauty that is stark and powerfully impressive; being in a natural condition; not processed or refined.
Originally from Indonesia, Nadia Gunardisurya has been travelling and living the life of a global nomad for the past 18 years. A self-taught photographer, her photography style follows her interest in culture and people.
Living in India, she grows more and more fascinated by the natural grace that the women possess here and their commitment to everyday beauty rituals that most of us have left behind for the sake of practicality. The show is dedicated to the simple yet complex perception of beauty.
